What Is Scaffolding In Construction

What is 'scaffolding'?

Well, scaffolding is a temporary framework that is usually used to support the structure of a building, and it can also be used as a platform for workers to carry out construction work. Depending on the type of construction work, the type of scaffolding may vary. Scaffolding needs to be well built, strong and sturdy in order to support the workers and various other construction materials placed on it. Scaffolding is usually made of timber or steel.

Why are there so many different types of scaffolding?

Sometimes a particular type of scaffolding is common because the equipment is readily available and many people are aware of the system. You may already be familiar with these regional differences, such as Kwikstage in Australia and Scotland, and Tube and Clip in England and Wales. there is a lot of local expertise on the complexity of each system, and given the local code written for these systems.

Depending on where you work in the world, different types of scaffolding systems will be more common. In Scandinavia and Northern Europe, where labour is very expensive, aluminium scaffolding is becoming more and more common. As aluminium is lighter than steel and most scaffolding needs to be lifted into place by hand, lighter scaffolding means that scaffolding can be erected more quickly, thus reducing labour costs.

In some countries, aluminium is expensive and labour is cheaper, so wooden poles and bamboo are quite common. As a designer, make sure you choose the scaffolding system that best suits your project and complies with local regulations.

The following is a brief discussion of the different types of scaffolding most commonly used in construction.

1. Kwikstage scaffolding

The Kwikstage system is made of durable galvanised steel.

Kwikstage scaffolding can be easily erected and assembled, and is easy to dismantle. This type of scaffolding is very useful for builders working on small or large projects. Kwikstage scaffolding can also be used as an alternative where conventional scaffolding is used.

Using a secure and robust ring lock system (read further explanation of the ring lock system), brand Kwikstage modular units can be easily built to almost any height.

2. Cantilever scaffolding

In this type of scaffolding, the standard is reinforced by a string of pins which are usually withdrawn through holes in the wall. This is why it is called single-frame scaffolding.

The pins are usually reinforced through holes within the floor, which is known as double-frame or free-standing frame scaffolding. Care must be taken when erecting cantilever scaffolding. Normally, cantilever scaffolding is used under the following conditions.

When working on the upper part of a wall

When there is no traffic on the ground and it is close to a wall

When the ground can support utility poles

3. Patented scaffolding

Patented scaffolds are also made of steel; that said; they are equipped with specific frames, couplings, etc. Most of these are commercially available off-the-shelf scaffolds. The working platforms are built on mounting brackets and can be custom fitted as required.

4. Single scaffolding

Single scaffolding is generally used for bricklaying and is therefore also known as brick layer scaffolding.

This type of scaffolding includes ledgers, standards, putlogs, etc., which are fitted to the wall surface at a specific distance of approximately 2.1 m. The difference between standards is approximately 2 to 2.6 m. The ledger connects all standards with a vertical clearance of 1.3 to 1.6 m. Putlogs are usually taken out of the visible difference left in the wall to one end of the ledger and putlogs tend to be placed in a space of 1.3 to 1.6 m. 5.

5. Steel scaffolding

Steel scaffolding is made of steel tubes connected by steel joints.

This type is easy to dismantle and build. This type of scaffold has better robustness and greater toughness and has excellent fire resistance. Although not economically priced, it provides better safety for workers.

6. Trestle scaffolding

Reinforces the working platform of the labourer on a portable scaffold or tripod. This type of scaffold has a consumption height of 5m and is generally used for painting or repair work in small spaces such as rooms or halls.

7. Suspended scaffolding

Suspended scaffolding is mainly used for maintenance work, painting, etc. With this type, the platform can be easily suspended from the roof with the help of wire ropes or chains. It can easily be lowered or raised to the required level.

What Is Scaffolding In Construction

What are the main components of scaffolding?

Scaffolding can take many different forms and therefore involve many components, but the main components involved in common tubular scaffolding and coupled scaffolding are standards, ledgers and beams.

Standards

Standards are long tubes or pipes running vertically which connect the mass of the scaffold directly to the ground. The base of each standard is attached to a base plate, which helps to distribute the weight carried by each standard. Standards are usually set at a height of 21 feet, so taller structures require multiple sets of standards to be connected to each other.

Ledgers

Between each standard is a ledger (also known as a runner) that runs horizontally along the length of the scaffold, which adds further support and weight distribution. Each compartment has platforms fixed to the front and rear of the scaffold frame. The position of the ledger defines the height of the working platform.

Crossbeams

The beams (or bearers) are placed on top of the ledgers and at right angles to them, they run horizontally and define the width of the bay. The crossbeams provide support for the standards by fixing them in place and support the placement of boards (or planks) on which workers can walk.

Supporting the scaffold frame also involves many other components, including: scaffold boards, lacing, brackets, fittings, etc.
